International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue (ISOTT)

ISOTT promotes research into all aspects of the processes involved in the transport of oxygen from the air to its final consumption in the cells of the various organs of the body. It organises an annual conference and publishes peer-reviewed manuscripts in the Springer book series Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology.

Orbituary Duane Bruley

Februar 17, 2025

It is with the greatest regret that I have to inform you that Duane Bruley passed away on August 23, 2024.

Dr. Bruley was one of the co-founders of ISOTT in 1973 along with Dr. M. Knisley and Dr. H. Bicher. In 1982, he was elected President of the Society and conducted a very successful ISOTT Annual Meeting in 1983 in Ruston, LA.

Although Dr. Bruley was traditionally trained as a chemical, nuclear and mechanical engineer, he found his scientific field of activity in biology. This combination of engineering and life sciences was a lifelong concern for Dr. Bruley, as he repeatedly emphasized at the award ceremonies during the ISOTT annual conferences. He saw the linking of these subject areas as an enrichment of the scientific discussion, in which the methods and ideas of both areas mutually enhanced each other. With these ideas, he has encouraged many young scientists to engage with the technologies and issues of the other research area beyond their own field of work. This interdisciplinarity approach to research in oxygen transport is a major part of the spirit of ISOTT.

In addition to his scientific commitment, Dr. Bruley was also the editor of the annual ISOTT conference proceedings for many years, making him an important contact for publishers. He also chaired the Knisely Award Committee.

ISOTT honored Dr. Bruley’s decades of commitment, especially to the promotion of young scientists, by deciding at the annual meeting in Rochester, NY, in 2003 to grant annual travel awards for participation in ISOTT meetings to deserving young scientists and name these the person of Duane Bruley (Duane Bruley Award). Our current president and chair of the ISOTT 2025 meeting, Prof. Ilias Tachtsidis, was one of the first recipients of the Duane Bruley Award in 2004.

Even after his death, we remain committed to continuing and developing ISOTT in his spirit.

Prof. Duane F. Bruley (Louisiana Tech University, USA) (ISOTT 1983, ISOTT 1974, ISOTT 1973)
